What Is a Typing Speed Test?

A typing speed test measures how many words you can type per minute (WPM) while maintaining accuracy. This test displays a passage of text and records exactly how fast and how accurately you type it. Your WPM score is calculated from the number of correctly typed characters divided by five (the average word length), adjusted for the time elapsed.

Accuracy matters just as much as speed. A typist who types 80 WPM at 99% accuracy is more productive than one who types 100 WPM at 85% accuracy — errors cost time to correct and reduce output quality. This is why our test tracks both metrics simultaneously.

How WPM Is Calculated

WPM is calculated as (correct keystrokes ÷ 5) ÷ time in minutes. The division by five converts keystrokes into "words" using the standard average word length. Incorrect keystrokes do not count toward your WPM and reduce your accuracy score. This is the same calculation used by professional typing certification bodies worldwide.

What Is a Good Typing Speed?

The global average typing speed is around 40 WPM. Most office jobs require a minimum of 50–60 WPM. Experienced professionals like writers, developers, and data entry specialists typically type between 70–90 WPM. Competitive typists and court reporters regularly exceed 100 WPM with near-perfect accuracy.

For students, 40–60 WPM is considered solid. For any role involving significant computer work, 60 WPM with 95%+ accuracy is a practical target. Pushing beyond 80 WPM at high accuracy puts you in the top 10% of typists globally.

How to Improve Your Typing Speed

The most effective way to improve is consistent daily practice of 15–20 minutes. Focus on accuracy first — slow down until you're hitting 95%+ accuracy, then gradually increase speed. Touch typing (without looking at the keyboard) is the single biggest skill jump most people can make. If you still hunt-and-peck, learning the home row position will double your speed within weeks.

Use the Easy difficulty setting to build confidence and muscle memory, then progress to Medium and Hard as your speed increases. Enabling punctuation and numbers at higher difficulty levels more accurately reflects real-world typing demands.

About This Typing Test

This test uses a MonkeyType-style character-by-character display so you see exactly which characters are correct and which need correction in real time. Correct characters appear in your accent colour, errors are highlighted in red with a wavy underline, and the current position is marked with a blinking cursor indicator. The test is completely free, works on any device, and requires no sign-up or account.
